Chapter 4

Carolina

Four months later

Putting my gloved hands into my coat pockets, I walked out into the November chill. Thankfully, it was the weekend, meaning I could sleep in tomorrow morning. No classes to distract me, and for once, I didn’t have to study until I felt like my brain was going to short-circuit.

I’d worked my ass off all semester to keep my grades up, and all that was left was to take my finals in a few weeks. Until then, I could take a couple days off to have a little fun. Caleb had mentioned taking the weekend to go down to Gatlinburg. I’d never been, and I was looking forward to spending the weekend sightseeing with him.

The last four months had been amazing with him, even though we’d kept our relationship private from everyone. That was my doing, and I felt guilty for making him keep us a secret from his family. But I knew if my mother found out, things would go poorly.

Her hate for Kin and the Jacobsons was intense. She would make Caleb’s and my life hell until she got what she wanted—our breakup. It wouldn’t matter to her that he made me happier than I’d ever been in my life. Or that I hadn’t stopped smiling once since we’d first made love.

That wasn’t true.

I did stop smiling from time to time.

When she called and I had to answer. Sometimes, I just let her go to voice mail, and I didn’t call her back for days. But other times, I knew I had to answer, and those were the times I lost my smile and this happy feeling I’d become addicted to.

Like now.

My phone was ringing, but I’d already seen her name on the screen before I’d even opened the door to step outside. It was her third call of the day, but I already knew why she was bothering me.

Her divorce from Scott wasn’t going as she’d planned. The news of their separation only lasted for a hot minute before the next story broke. She was barely mentioned on page twelve of her favorite tabloid, and she’d thrown a hissy fit about it that had lasted days. But now that she and Scott were discussing the terms of their split, she was hoping to get front and center in the spotlight.

Only, she wasn’t.

I didn’t know what kind of magic Scott had weaved, but there hadn’t been a single mention of the divorce. Nothing about his new relationship with Shannon Stewart had been publicized, even though I knew Shannon was already planning their spring wedding.

My ringing phone finally shut up, but before I could breathe a sigh of relief, it started yet again. Groaning, I paused long enough to pull it out of my pocket and lifted it to my ear. “What, Mother?” I snapped, fed up with her and her crap.

“Carolina, it’s me!” Georgia’s frantic voice filled my ear. “You need to come home. Mom… I found her on the bathroom floor this morning. She slit her wrists.
